I've managed to fix this in the past, using hp print and scan doctor. trying to run it on this occasion, it appears to hang during the windows (wia) scan. this has happened twice.. I had visited hp support portal & downloaded hp print & scan doctor. after running this tool, it says it can't fix the problem. it detects the first two step of driver (or device may be) manager & driver are okay..
